John Craig is an environmental geologist who took a composting class through Ohio State University Extension in 2010, graduated as a master composter, and built a career around the idea that healthy soil might be one of the most powerful tools we have for reversing climate change. He founded the nonprofit weCompost2 and more recently launched Hart's Worm Farm Cooperative, a network of independent worm farmers who receive physical, financial, intellectual, and emotional support from the cooperative while making decisions together by unanimous consent. The model runs on a hub system, with a main location in Pomona raising worms by the tens of thousands and smaller hubs spread across the Inland Empire and Orange County in apartments, churches, and schools. By 2030, John is working toward a worldwide network of more than 500 independent worm farmers, diverting 500 tonnes of organic waste from landfills, and proving on the ground that even a small amount of worm castings can help plants pull significantly more carbon out of the atmosphere and store it back in the soil.
